Julian Assange has been in the Ecuadorian Embassy three months: Join the vigil on Wed 19 September.

Julian Assange entered the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on 19 June and has been there ever since. Support the vigil this Wednesday 19 September to mark the occasion and keep up pressure on Britain to allow him safe passage to Ecuador.

Background

A daily vigil has been maintained outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for three months since 19 June when Julian Assange sought refuge there and applied for asylum in Ecuador. This application was approved by Ecuador mid-August. Julian remains in the Embassy because Britain has not yet agreed to grant him safe passage to the airport, although this would be the normal procedure in asylum cases. Even after the fatal shooting from within the Libyan embassy of PC Yvonne Fletcher in 1984, all embassy officials were given safe passage out of the country.

However, nothing is normal in the way (wild) western powers deal with Julian Assange who, having invoked the wrath of the Empire by revealing through WikiLeaks disclosures the truth about its wars and malign interference around the world, is now being subjected to vengeful persecution initiated by the US and assisted by its allies around the world, most notably Britain, Sweden and Australia.

The excuse for refusing safe passage is the extradition warrant obtained in relation to Sweden’s pursuit of Julian over alleged sexual misconduct (there are no charges), but even reactionary papers such as the Daily Mail seem finally to be waking up to the unreliable evidence and many irregularities in the way Sweden has pursued Julian over this matter.

Join the vigil on Wednesday afternoon and early evening.

  1. Governments should not have ‘secrets’. Nor should corporations. In a world where everything is known – the ability to perform ‘wrong’ is curtailed. It is a simple idea. Those who disagree, can only do so for an equally simple idea – the wish to be able to deceive, in order to retain an ability to do wrong.
