Newcastle-under-Lyme College, Staffordshire, 17 December
This event was originally scheduled to take place on International Human Rights Day, 10 December, but was postponed due to illness to 17 December, Manning’s 26th birthday and her fourth spent in jail.
Keen supporters of Chelsea Manning and Wise Up Action, along with Diversity Advisor Theresa Kirkham Blair set up a stall in our Food Hall to share information about International Human Rights day with students. They spoke about the need for all to be outspoken, to celebrate democracy and to challenge issues as they happen across the world so that we can change the lives of those struggling to a lead a life free from oppression.
Students and staff signed Amnesty International’s online petition to pressure the American government to re-examine their imprisonment of Chelsea Manning and grant her clemency. Chelsea was charged and jailed for leaking materials and information via WikiLeaks, including crimes of war. We collected 53 signatures for amnesty’s petition.
