Ecuador Protects Assange: 4-year Asylum Anniversary Vigil Call Out

The fourth anniversary of Ecuador’s formal granting of the protection of political asylum to Julian Assange falls on Tuesday 16 August 2016. To thank Ecuador for its brave and principled stance over this time, and to show solidarity with the WikiLeaks Editor in Chief, we call on you to join the on-going solidarity vigil at the embassy on that day:

When:            Tuesday 16/08/2016 between 4pm and 6pm

Where:           Ecuadorian Embassy in London, No 3 Hans Crescent, Knightsbridge

By Tube:         Knightsbridge Tube Station (Piccadilly Line)

(Some placards will be available, but we advise getting creative and expressing yourself via your own!)

Feb 16 379Ecuador considered Julian Assange’s asylum request for nearly 8 weeks in the summer of 2012. In so doing it painstakingly assessed the background and particulars of Assange’s situation and concluded that he was under threat, the victim of politically motivated persecution as a direct consequence of his publishing work with WikiLeaks.

DSC_0537Ecuador has withstood pressure from those who seek to pursue Assange and other Wikileaks staff, and continues to recognise and realise his human rights. This protection also allows the valuable of WikiLeaks to continue.

A reminder of Ecuador’s announcement of granting political asylum to Julian Assange:

With the on-going US investigation into WikiLeaks, and the protracted preliminary investigation of Assange by Sweden’s twice-censured prosecutor Marianne Ny amounting in the judgement of UN experts to a 6-year arbitrary detention, we call on human rights groups, whistleblowers, journalists, political prisoners and concerned citizens to stand with Julian and Ecuador at this time.

Join us in solidarity, thanks and celebration!
