Dear Friends,

at 10:30am on Monday we battled the elements to come together outside the Scottish Parliament to protest the extradition trial of courageous journalist Julian Assange. Some people travelled the distance from Aberdeen, and some came from Fife and Glasgow to mark the beginning of the troubling process with a show of solidarity and non-violent resistance.

Quite a few of the activists attending the protest were buoyed by the speeches given at the Edinburgh Scotland Must Resist event held last month to inspire and encourage activism and there is a great willingness to move forward with more protests and leafleting events Scotland-wide.

Two activists from Aberdeen are planning to meet for leafleting actions. There will also be a few activists leafleting in Glasgow in the coming weeks, and another small group planning a leafleting action in Edinburgh. Anyone who would like to be involved with any of these types of actions please get in touch at:

@ScotsDefendAssange@protonmail.com.

Particularly encouraging was the attendance and generous support of activists from other organisations who are keen to come together for future actions. Thank you to Unicorns for Peace, the Labour activists, the representatives from the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and the wonderful Carol from Women in Black who has protested in Edinburgh every single Saturday for a staggering 19 years on behalf of Stop the War.

Here is a link to access the brilliant flyer being used at leafleting events in London at the moment. You’ll see that they are fully comprehensive and very informative:

If your preference is for some of the Scots Defend Assange: Scotland Must Resist posters or badges made by Somerset Bean please email me at @ScotsDefendAssange@protonmail.com and I will send on the files.

Thank you to all the lovely people who came along and made this action such a success. And thank you to those of you who were brave enough to put yourselves out there by being willing to record a message, it has been greatly appreciated by so many.

Special thanks to @AssangeEdits for putting together the wonderful edit of our protest and for capturing the spirit of the day.

Looking forward to the next time!

  1. Jamie says:

    More people expressing the disgust for what the UK is doing to an innocent journalist. As they say Julian Assange should be honoured, not silenced.
