#Twitterstorm Commemorating the #WikiLeaks #IraqWarLogs 10th publication Anniversary

The #IraqWarLogs Campaign commemorates 10 years from the publication by WikiLeaks of 391,832 military reports about how the war in Iraq was conducted by the USA and its allies. On the day, a small group of protestors will gather outside the newspaper The Guardian to remind its staff the role they played in the 2010 publication and call them out for their silence on the plight of WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange who is imprisoned in maximum security Belmarsh prison for those very publications. On the contrary read here how they have played a part in his prosecution and persecution.

For those in UK or internationally unable to join our demo, we ask they join our twitter campaign to remind the older and educate the younger on the public interest revelations brought forward in The Iraq War Logs.

Below you will find some model tweets, put together by JADC’s Antonia Omirou, steal them! make them your own and join our campaign! In solidarity #FreeAssange!

Post 1:

At 5pm on 22/10/2010 @WikiLeaks released the largest classified military leak in history. The 391,832 reports, document the war and occupation in Iraq, as told by soldiers in the United States Army.

“They detail events as seen and heard by the US military troops on the ground in Iraq and are the first real glimpse into the secret history of the war that the United States government has been privy to throughout.”

Post 2:

“Iraq during the same period (compared to the Afganistan War), was five times as lethal with equivalent population size.”

The reports detail 109,032 deaths in Iraq, comprised of 66,081 ‘civilians’; 23,984 ‘enemy’ (those labelled as insurgents); 15,196 ‘host nation’ (Iraqi government forces) and 3,771 ‘friendly’ (coalition forces). The majority of the deaths (66,000, over 60%) of these are civilian deaths.  That is, 31 civilians dying every day during the six year period. For comparison, the ‘Afghan War Diaries’, previously released by WikiLeaks, covering the same period, detail the deaths of some 20,000 people.

The #IraqWarLogs contain information on the deaths caused by war, which no state has a right to withhold from the public indefinitely.  Yet, the US government is persecuting, and the UK torturing, a journalist for revealing them, in an effort to cover up for their crimes and the need for immediate prosecution of the war criminals.

Post 9:

According to @IraqBodyCount, “All information about the deaths caused in any disaster, be it a man-made war or a natural catastrophe, is public information which no state has a right to withhold from the public indefinitely. Even in military circles, the latest thinking accepts this view, for a variety of reasons that include its own best interests.

Thread:

Yet these Iraq logs (like the “Afghanistan War Diaries” released by WikiLeaks earlier in 2010) contain information on civilian and other casualties that has been kept from public view by the US government for more than six years. Even knowledge of the details within them – such as the fact that they record the names of thousands of Iraqi civilian victims – has been kept secret.”

The disturbing #CollateralMurder video, showing evidence of a US military helicopter firing at unarmed civilians in Iraq, was part of the #IraqWarLogs that were published by #Wikileaks on 22 of October 2010.

Why is an award winning newspaper keep repeating in error that Julian Assange was charged by Sweden when it is false? How many times will WIkiLeaks supporters have to attempt to correct the record in the Assange case at this precise point over the last 10 years?

#CorrectTheRecord

In March Julian Assange’s legal team applied for Bail as Covid has imposed huge risks on the prison population. The WikiLeaks publisher had a new champion in his bail application, his partner Stella Morris who revealed that the ordeal of the embassy years had a silver lining. Julian and Stella formed a union and had two beautiful children. The UK’s media covered the news with the usual lack of care and at least one complaint was filed in an effort to correct the record in the Julian Assange case.
