Join this remarkable event of music, art and discussion about how secret power is encroaching upon media freedom and democracy, particularly given the witch-hunt against WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange. Organised by Academic and Trade Unionist Dr. Deepa Driver in her FreeTheTruth series of events.

The event will showcase prints of artwork from Guantanamo and a verbal contribution from former prisoner.

Julian Assange will also receive an important award on the day.

Discussion participants:

Iain Overton is the Executive Director of Action on Armed Violence, a London-based conflict research charity. He was covered over two dozen wars and holds a PhD from the University of Portsmouth for his writing on guns and suicide bombings. A former BBC and ITN journalist, Overton’s human rights reporting has received multiple awards. He worked with Julian on Wikileaks’ Iraq War Logs release, overseeing documentaries that were shown on Channel 4, Al Jazeera and BBC radio. Stefania Maurizi is an Italian investigative journalist working for the major Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, after 14 years working for the Italian newsmagazine l’Espresso and the Italian daily La Repubblica. She has worked on all WikiLeaks releases of secret documents since 2009. She is also the only journalist who has conducted multi-jurisdictional litigation to defend the right of the press to access the full documentation on Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks journalists.

Jonathan Cook is an award-winning British journalist.His reports and commentaries have appeared in the Guardian, the Observer, the Times and the New Statesman (London). He is the author of three books on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Today he provides regular commentary and analysis on the Middle East, and blogs about the media, propaganda, corporate malfeasance, the environment and global politics.
